Algebraic Properties of Equality Foldable

Wednesday, June 8, 2016
Below are pictures of my Algebraic Properties of Equality foldable that I have used for the past 3 years. For the past two years, we do examples in the foldable together and then students independently match up the properties on the left side.

If you download the foldable, you will notice that I actually made the foldable a cut and paste activity. I did not have time to do this last year since I did not want the whole lesson to be based on "cutting and pasting." However, I may do the left side first, write down examples, and then have students cut and paste the properties for the foldable to the right.

That just sounded very confusing, but if you download the files, you will understand what I am talking about. :)

Normally, I like writing hints next to each property. For example, one of my geometry teachers showed us the R,S, T = 1, 2, 3 trick. This sticks with students! We make little notes in our foldable that help us remember the difference between the properties.

If you have any questions, let me know! This goes great with my Algebra Proofs book activity.

Here are the files that I used for this lesson:

  1. This is such a wonderful activity - thank you so much for sharing! I've set up a Smart Notebook file with each proof. I've set up the statements and reasons as separate objects so that kids can move them on the page. If you'd like a copy, send me an email kbaker at ghcds.org.

  2. Thank you so much for providing such detailed info about your foldables and activities! As a teacher who tried and failed at implementing the INB this year, your posts help me feel confident in setting everything up for next year. I'm wondering if you have the foldable mentioned in this post for sale on tpt or if there is a way that I could get a copy? Thanks!
